Old Rock victory for Dale

Last Saturday the yearly Old Rock team event took place at Dale when Shetland GC, Whalsay GC, Lounge and SVT/Masons golf teams played against each other. The format was doubles matchplay over 9 holes with all three matches taking place on the same day.

In the first matches Shetland GC beat last years winners Whalsay by 3.5 points to 2.5 with SVT/Masons scoring a convincing victory over the Lounge by 5 points to 1. In the second round Shetland GC secured another victory when they beat SVT/Masons 4-2, the other match saw Lounge make up some ground with a 5-1 victory over Whalsay. After two matches Shetland GC were leading on 7.5 points with SVT/Masons on 7 points, Lounge on 6 points and Whalsay on 3.5 points.

In the final matches SVT/Masons defeated Whalsay by 3.5 points to 2.5 meaning that Shetland GC needed to beat Lounge for an overall victory although a draw or narrow win for Lounge would have given SVT/Masons the trophy. However, Shetland GC won the match 4-2 to win the Old Rock trophy by a single point from SVT/Masons, having won all three of their matches.

The previous Wednesday saw the continuation of the summer league when 28 competitors played in a stableford sweepstake. Chris Conboy consolidated his previous weeks victory with another excellent round to add to his points tally, his score of 41 points was enough to ensure first place and another handicap reduction. Andy Glen took second place with a score of 40 points while Paul Nicol continued his fine run in third place on 38 points, David Howells was fourth on 37 points.

The monthly medal and seniors medal took place on a bright but breezy Sunday with David Thomson leading the way with an excellent round of 73 (net 62) to take first place in the senior medal. The winner of the May medal was Alan Harcus with a round of 70 (net 65) which was just enough to win by virtue of a better back nine from David Howells in second with 72 (net 65) and third placed Jimmy Sales, 86 (net 65).
