Harcus is County Champ

The Shetland County Championships were played over 36 holes at Dale last Saturday in windy conditions. This did not prevent some excellent scoring and in the first round there was little to separate any of the leading players. Alan Harcus, Jock Sim, George Leask and Ross McDougall all came in with scores of 74 to share the lead at half way. Ernie Smith and Jordan Leask were one shot back after both returning scores of 75. Ross Chisholm and Stuart Fox were a further shot back on 76.

The second round saw an even stronger northerly wind with occasional heavy showers meaning that the back nine in particular was playing very hard. Of the first round leaders only Harcus was able to maintain any momentum, once again leading the way with a fine score of 73. This meant that he would become the County Champion with an overall score of 147, four shots clear of second place Ross Chisholm whose second round score of 75 gave him a total of 151. Harcus receives the SGU silver medal for his victory while Chisholm gets a bronze medal for taking second place.
Jordan Leask returned a 76 to take third place, also with a score of 151 but losing out on second place by virtue of a poorer second round.

Other good second round scores came from Colin Bain (74) and Grant Wiseman (75). Wiseman took first place in the handicap section with scores of 77 (net 68) and 75 (net 66) giving an overall net score of 134. Second place in the handicap went to Erik Burgess with scores of 78 (net 65) and 82 (net 69) also giving a net total of 134 but Wiseman’s better second round gave him first place. Ross McDougall couldn’t maintain his fine first round form but an overall net score of 137 gave him third place.

The previous Wednesday saw a Summer League sweepstake being won by Tom Simpson with a score of 73 (net 67), Ian Sandilands was second with 89 (net 68) and Dougie MacDonald was in third place with 76 (net 69).

Sunday saw the June monthly medal and seniors medal played with Ernie Smith returning the lowest score, 72 (net 66) to take first place by virtue of a better back nine from Dougie MacDonald 73 (net 66). Alan Harcus was third with a score of 72 (net 67). The senior medal was won by Arthur Williamson with a score of 83 (net 70).

The June medal was also the final qualifying event for the Shetland Golf Club Wilson Cup team. Jordan Leask had already qualified as a result of winning the Club Championship two weeks ago with the remaining team being made up of the three players with the lowest cumulative scores over 6 rounds from selected competitions. Alan Harcus (431), Ernie Smith (443) and Stuart Fox (443) qualified for the team with Colin Bain (444) just missing out by one shot. The Wilson Cup will be held in Reay on 5th and 6th July.
