Junior Open Golf Day

On Sunday, 32 juniors braved the elements and competed in the 2nd Junior Open Golf Day, sponsored by BP Sullom Voe Terminal.

Each competitor was kindly given a water bottle and golf ball from the sponsors which was greatly appreciated.

There were four competitions held on the day and the main 18 hole open was split into the usual net and gross categories.

Jordan Leask continued his winning streak with a fine 73 and securing the gross title for the sixth consecutive year. James Aitken was second with a 96 but was unfortunate not to have scored better with a couple of holes letting him down. In the handicap section, Jake Constable was second with a net 73 and  Allan Johnston won his first Junior Open with an excellent net 56.This also meant Allan’s handicap was reduced  to 29.

The 4 hole competition had 5 girls and 5 boys competing in it and some really good scores were returned. In fourth place was Ryan Kirk with 12 points, in third was Darren Kerr with 11 points, second was Iona Middleton with 9 points and first place went to Alex Kerr also with 9 points but by virtue of having a single putt on the second hole.

The 7 hole competition was won by Joe Finnie with 44, second was Sean Graham with 48 and third was Conner Uren with 58.

Some excellent scores were also returned in the 9 hole competition and this entry was boosted by the Whalsay Juniors that were playing. It was great to see them come down on such a poor day, and they didn’t disappoint and took back some prizes to Whalsay. In fourth place was Stuart Fraser with a net 40, third place was Alex Leiper with net 37. Second place went to  Whalsay’s Stuart Hutchison with a fine net 35.5 on his Dale debut who lost out by half a point to Lewis Fraser who had a net 35 to win his first ever competition.

Best Visitor outwith the prizes went to Annie Rickard again from Whalsay and best Girl outwith the prizes couldn’t be separated so Libby Fox and Chloe Nicolson shared the prize.

In the putting competitions Mark Hutcheon won the 7 and under group, Gary Sim the 8-11 category and James Aitken the 12+ category.

Mike Killeen from the Sponsors said, "BP on behalf of Sullom Voe are pleased to be able to be the main sponsor for this event and that it’s good to see youngsters keen and interested in sport and in particular today in golf. BP supportive in seeing growth and development of sport in Shetland and this is ideal way in getting children involved from a young age as they are full of enthusiasm. We’d like to offer our congratulations to those that organised it all and for all their efforts in the work they do with the Juniors."

Junior Convener, Alan Harcus thanked Mike and BP SVT for their continued support along with Michael Grant who donated food for the day. Alan also thanked all the coaches and parents who helped in any way making the day a success.
