SJS Junior Open

On Sunday 11 boys competed for the annual Shetland Janitorial Supplies Open in breezy conditions. 3 boys from Whalsay bolstered the entry and once more went back to the bonny isle with prizes.

In the handicap section the scoring was very good with 65 from Lewis Fraser only good enough for 3rd place. In second place was Lewis’s brother Stuart, who must have thought he had done enough to secure the title with an excellent 62, but Whalsay’s Stuart Hutchison came in with a tremendous 58 to win the SJS tankard by 4 shots and reduce his handicap. Stuart also cut his handicap from 54 to 50 and Lewis reduced his by one to 49.

In the scratch section a new name was guaranteed on the shield this year as seven times winner Jordan Leask had gone to University. Sandwick's Sean Smith was leader in the clubhouse for quite a while with a gross 90, and this looked good enough to win the trophy but in form player Jake Constable had other ideas and pipped Sean by one stroke to win the SJS shield with a fine 89. James Spanswick was third with 100. Alan Harcus thanked the SJS for their continued sponsorship and Russell Swainston who presented the prizes. Thanks also to the boys who came down from Whalsay.

This weekend sees the final competition of the year for the juniors and after it at 4.30 pm there will be the presentation of trophies for the year. Could all trophy winners please make an effort to attend the prize giving.
