Tom is club champion

Last weekend saw the first senior’s event on the golfing calendar at Dale when George Leask won his first over 50’s competition while another veteran, Tom Simpson, enjoyed success in the club championship for the first time.

Leask took first place in the scratch competition of the Senior Open with a score of 73 to win by one shot from Whalsay’s Graeme Sandison, 74. Tom Simpson was a further shot back in third place on 75. The handicap section was also very close with Davie Thomson taking first prize with a score of 76, net 66. In second place with a score of 79, net 67, was Paul Foster. Ronnie Birnie was in third place, 76, net 68, with Richie Smith in fourth (82, net 69) and Whalsay’s Stewart Anderson fifth (88, net 71).

The club championship and Henry Gilbertson Trophy competitions also came to a close last weekend. The two form players so far this year, Tom Simpson and last year’s winner, Jordan Leask, competed for the club championship while Michael Boxwell and Marc Henry played each other in the final of the Henry Gilbertson Trophy.

In the club championship it was the experience of Tom Simpson that overcame young Jordan Leask. Simpson has been playing some exceptional golf this season and was two under par when he clinched victory on the 15th hole, 4 up with 3 to play to become club champion for the first time. Simpson’s victory means that he automatically qualifies for the team to take part in the Wilson Cup in Kirkwall next month. Jordan Leask has already qualified with Ross Chisholm and Michael Boxwell currently holding the remaining places.

The Henry Gilbertson Trophy was won by Marc Henry who played well to beat Michael Boxwell 3 holes up with 2 to play.

Other competitions this month saw Graeme Davie win the Wood Group shield with a score of 88, net 65, with Adrian Henderson second with a score of 76, net 67, and Marc Henry in third, 79, net 68.

The men’s Bazeley Charity Cup which is played off the forward tees was won by John Teale who returned a score of 80, net 61, to take first place from Chris Conboy, 76 net 64, with Rab Duffin in third with 83, net 64.
