Burgess Cup report

The Burgess Cup took place recently with 10 couples taking part in the mixed foursomes format.

The weather was similar to an SIBC forecast with just about every possible scenario covered. Bright calm conditions with the wind increasing that brought in showers which developed into heavy rain.

Margaret Simpson & Alan Harcus got off to a great start and with 3 birdies in the first 9 holes and they turned in 37. Unfortunately they couldn’t sustain this early promise and faded away with a 6, 7 & 8 within the first 6 holes of the back nine. They did manage to have a strong finish with birdies at 17 & 18 though to finish with a fine 67. Playing with Margaret & Alan were Jim & May Grant who were steady from start to finish. May played some lovely shots thorough out the round, with the pick of them being a majestic wedge from the rough at the side of the 10th to 3ft which Jim managed to hole for a fabulous 4. Fabulous you ask? Let me explain. May’s tee shot hit the bridge and bounced into the thick rough, so Jim played a provisional! Unfortunately this went straight into even thicker rough which prompted May into playing a 2nd provisional! With double figures looking a distinct possibility Jim found May’s first ball and managed to hack it out into the semi rough, then up stepped May and the rest is history. Fabulous!

Continued fine play from both Jim & May meant they came in with a fine 68 to be in 2nd place behind Margaret &Alan.

Iris Anderson & Derek Nicolson played very steady golf considering they got the worst of the weather to play in. A fine 67 meant they were tied for first place but with a better back nine they secured the Burgess Cup and bottle of Champagne pushing Margaret & Alan and Jim & May into 2nd & 3rd respectively.

A club spokesman thanked all the players for supporting this event and George & Margaret Burgess for donating the Champagne .
