The gent's competative golf season got underway with the traditional curtain raiser, the Captain's Challenge on Saturday 2nd April. Players arrived at the clubhouse in heavy rain with captain Erik Burgess doubting whether any golf would take place, however by tee-off time the weather broke and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all participants. The Captain's team, albeit without any help from the captain who lost his game, were victorious by 2-1 over the Vice-Captain's team.
The first Sunday Sweepstake was won by Keith Fraser with 33 points on countback from Rab Duffin, with Eddie Thompson third with 32 points.
The second weekend saw some excellent golf despite testing conditions. Derek Nicolson layed the foundations for a good season in winning the Tootsie Thomson with 39 points. In second was Abdelhaq Zaoui on 37 points and Stuart Fox third with 36 points.
The Sunday Sweepstake was won by Paul Foster with 38 points, second was Geo Sim a point behind and tied with 36 in third were Jordan Leask and Lee Carter.
The Schlumberger Cup saw Jordan Leask also hit the 39 point mark, with Jimmy Smith second with 36 and Adrian Henderson third with 34 points. That Sunday's Sweepstake also witnessed a winning total of 39 points by Michael Welsh, with Stuart Fox second on 36 and Jimmy Smith third with 34 points.
The first stroke-play competition, the RNLI Spoon was netted by Billy Finnie with an nett 65 (80), in second was Michael Boxwell with a 66 (72) which was the lowest gross of the day. A trio of Nigel Timberlake (90), Paul Nicol (82) and David (Dickie) Smith (88) were third with nett 67's.
The April Medal saw a win for Michael Welsh with a nett 67 (80), second was Nigel Timberlake with a nett 71 (93) and third with the lowest gross of the day was Robbie Jamieson 72 (78).
The final competition in April was the LJK Cup, which is played of the forward tees, and saw a victory for Lee Carter with a nett 62 (71) on countback from Steve Lamb also with a nett 62 (76). In third was Jock Sim with a nett 63 (71) which tied with Lee for the lowest gross of the day.
April has seen an encouraging start to the competition scene with a healthy number of entries, and numerous comments from players on the excellent condition of the course so early on in the golfing calendar which is testament to the hard work by Edwin and his team over the winter.
May sees the start of the Wednesday competitions along with the qualifying rounds of the Club Championship and the first open of the season, the Jotun Open on 28 May. Players are also reminded that the matchplay draws are now posted in the locker room.
