June started with the rescheduled May Medal being cancelled for a second time as the weather ensured the course closed sign was raised once again. June saw the last of the qualifying competitions for Wilson Cup selection being played, where a player’s best 5 rounds from the 12 counting events decides the team. The top four, in order, were new course record holder Ross MacDougall, Robbie Jamieson, Ernie Smith and Alan Harcus. With Ernie being unable to play his place will be taken by fifth place Michael Boxwell. We wish the team all the best for the competition in Whalsay over the weekend of 9/10 July.
The first Saturday of the month saw Keith Fraser claim the DITT Cup by a shot with an (80) nett 66 from Magnus Leask (74) 67 and Jimmy Sales (81) 67. Magnus’s 74 being the lowest gross of the day. The Moorpark Greensome saw an extremely tight finish with the pair of Geo Sim and Jimmy Sales edging out Keith Fraser and Robert Sales by the slimmest of margins 63.6 to 63.8! The Wood Group Shield was played on the Sunday following the LEF Open and was won by Ramsay Hogg with an excellent (80) nett 61, well clear of Robbie Jamieson with the lowest gross of the day (71) nett 66, with Ernie Smith third on (74) nett 69.
The Midnight Cup made a welcome return to the fixture list on Friday 17 June on a lovely evening for golf. It was decided that a 9-hole stableford sweep was to be played with Marc Henry emerging victorious and claiming the prize pot with 20 points, four clear from the chasing pack of Ian Leiper, Patrick Robertson and Adrian Henderson. Another old favourite being resurrected was the Old Rock, where 5 teams of 4 played a texas scramble. The Golf Club 2 team of Ross Chisholm, J Campbell Farquhar and Stuart Anderson were well coached
to victory by John W Thomson. The June Medal saw some exceptional scoring with 8 players being par or better. Rising to the top of the class was Davy L Thomson with a (73) nett 62, one shot ahead of Brydon Leask (73) nett 63 with Ernie Smith, once again, third with a (69) nett 64. Ernie’s 69 being the lowest gross on the day.
The Wednesday sweeps have been well supported with some good scores as the race for the Summer League trophy hots up (unlike the weather!). The first sweep of the month saw Jimmy Mercer claim victory by virtue of countback with an (87) nett 66 from Robert Sales (92). Keith Fraser was third with (74) nett 69, the lowest gross on the day was Alan Harcus (74). The following week again saw countback being required to separate the top two with Stewart Tomlinson (76) nett 65 edging out Dale Smith (81). Third, on countback, was John Mouat (92) nett 66 from Steven Henry (86), with Colin Bain having the lowest gross of (75). The third Wednesday saw Grant Wiseman claim top spot with a (76) nett 68, a shot ahead of Michael Boxwell (75), the lowest gross on the day, nett 69 and Ross MacDougall third (75) nett 70. The final midweek sweep of the month saw Keith Fraser edge out Abdelhaq Zaoui on countback after both finished on 39 points. Third was David Nicol on 38 points, again on countback, from David Howells.
