LEF Open
News Posted: 14 June 2010
A bright but slightly breezy day saw 73 competitors, the highest turnout so far this year, enter the fray for the LEF Open.
The handicap section saw a multitude of good scoring with Mark Penders nett 67 securing fifth place. A shot better off were club captain Erik Burgess and Geo Sim, Geo taking third by virtue of a better back nine. Second for the second week running was Gavin Philip with a nett 65. But securing the win was Ian Pottinger with a superb 64.
The scratch golfers were giving no quarter either with three players tying on 73 - Tommy Simpson, Ross Chisholm and Whalsay's Neil Anderson. For the second week in a row a play-off was needed over the 10th and 7th holes until a winner was found. Neil was eliminated at the 3rd extra hole, leaving Ross and Tommy to go the 23rd hole before the stalemate was broken with Tommy engineering a par 4 to take the title.
Other prizewinners were Derek Nicolson who was nearest the pin at both the 9th and 12th holes. Dougie MacDonald who was closest in 2 at the 16th and Greame Sandison who won the longest drive at the 4th.
Thanks must go to Christine and Amanda for the catering, Pauline behind the bar, a sizeable contingent from Whalsay for coming down but most importantly Dave Suckley and the continued sponsorship of L.E.F which is greatly appreciated.
