Season takes off at last

The first golfing competitions of the year got underway at Dale recently after several events had to be held back due to the poor weather earlier in the month. The Jock Laurie Trophy was won by Ian Leask with a score of 38 stableford points with Michael Boxwell taking second place with 36 points. Alan Harcus and Crawford McIntyre were in third and fourth spots, both scoring 35 points. The following day saw the Caira Trophy being played for and this was won by Rab Duffin after he returned an excellent score of 81 (net 61) to take first place by a comfortable margin of 6 shots, taking his handicap down by two as a result. Michael Boxwell again had to settle for second place with a score of 72 (net 67), in third place was Chris Conboy (net 68), and Ian Scott was fourth with a score of net 69.

The following week saw the Schlumberger Doubles take place with players matching up their stableford scores. The best individual score of the day came from Angus Ward who came in with 37 points, his partner Arthur Williamson returned a score of 33 points and this gave them a combined score of 70, enough to take first place by a margin of 6 points. Steve Lamb (35) and Paul Foster (29) were in second place on 64 points closely followed by Dougie Shearer (34) and David Kerr (29) on 63 points and Ronnie Birnie (34) and George Leask (29) also on 63 points.

Last Sunday’s sweepstake was won by Neil Watt with a score of 89 (net 68) with Jordan Leask taking second place with 75 (net 69).

This weekends competitions are the RNLI Spoon on Saturday and the April Monthly Medal on Sunday. The monthly medal will be the first qualifying event for this year’s Wilson Cup to held in Reay on the first weekend in July.
