Shetland Freezer Foods Open 2011

Last Saturday saw the third gents open of the season with the Shetland Freezer Foods Open. A healthy entry of 57 set out in the quest for silverware as a low mist hung on the hills above dale. The close conditions were not just a prelude to a particularly heavy rain shower but to the extremely tight scores at the end of the day.

With the Freezer Foods Open being a handicap trophy then we begin with the scratch prizes. Taking second with a gross 71 was Tom Simpson who just edged out Grant Wiseman by virtue of countback. But winning the scratch title this year, after winning the handicap last year was Ernie Smith by a shot with a gross 70.

The battle for the handicap trophy saw some wonderful scoring, a 2-under par net 66 (89) by John W Thomson was only good enough for fourth. Dougie Shearer took third with a net 63 (72), edged out on countback by Jimmy Smith also 63 (83). But squashing the rest into submission after returning from the Island Games, was Ramsay Hogg with an excellent nett 62 (78). Ramsay's victory is all the more remarkable considering his mother witnessed his first two holes and went home thinking this wouldn't be one of his better days!

Other prizewinners on the day were:- Nearest the Pin in two at the 4th - Dougie Shearer, Nearest the Pin at the 9th - Bon Campbell, Longest Drive at the 13th - Grant Wiseman and making it a family double, Nearest the Pin at the 17th - Gary Wiseman.
