April/May Season Update

The new playing season is now underway at Shetland Golf Club. The men’s section kicked off on the last Saturday of March with a healthy turnout of 20 arrived to tee up for the men’s Captain’s Challenge, which was won by the Vice-Captains’ team 3 ½ points to 1 ½. Keith Fraser won the following days’ Sunday sweepstake.

The first individual silverware up for grabs was the Tootsie Thomson Shield. Despite the mist and drizzle rolling in shortly after the first group teed off, the scoring was quite encouraging for the start of the season. Jordan Leask claimed victory with 37 points; Ronnie Gair took second with 34 points with Derek Nicolson and Campbell Farquhar next on 33 points.

The men competed for the Ian MacDonald Cup the following Saturday with the early starters teeing off in a snowstorm that saw 4 entrants decide not take to the course. Despite the cold conditions there was some excellent scoring, George Fraser took first place with 38 points continuing his good form from the Captain’s Challenge. Stewart Tomlinson sneaked second on 37 points from Ross MacDougall on countback, with Keith Fraser fourth with 35 points.

Ross remained on the podium on Sunday taking first place in the Schlumberger Doubles with partner Lee Carter with a total of 69 points (Ross 34, Lee 35). Second place went to father and son duo Ian B Leask (33) and Jordan Leask (32) for a total of 65 points, a point ahead of Derek Nicolson (33) and Mark Gair (31) in third. The highest individual points scored on the day was Keith Fraser with 38 points.

The weekend of 21/22 April saw all competitions cancelled. The following weekend saw Patrick Robertson teach the others a lesson in winning the RNLI Spoon with 38 points, a point behind in second was Keith Fraser from the quartet of Richie Smith, John Teale, Jordan Leask and Dave McNicol on 33 points. Sunday saw the re-arranged April Medal being won by Jordan Leask with a 69 (72), filling a hole in second was Steve Lamb 70 (84) edging out Johnny Shing (87) by virtue of a better inward half.

The first weekend of May saw the Saturday competition being cancelled due to snow. The following day saw a tight finish for the Intersport trophy with treasurer Dave McNicol claiming the silverware by dint of a better last 6 holes from Ross Chisholm after both scored 37 points, one ahead of Jordan Leask who took third.

May seen the start of the Wednesday competitions, which count towards the Summer League Cup, with Patrick Robertson continuing his good form winning the first competition with 40 points, six clear of Ian Pottinger who was a point ahead of a sextet of players on 33 points. The second Wednesday competition again saw a winning score of 40 points, this time Abdelhaq Zaoui steered a winning path, with Vice-captain Ross MacDougall second with 37 points and John Teale third on 34 points.
