May 16th to 31st Gents Competition Review

News Posted: 27th May 2019

The main focus this past few weeks has been the Club championship and Henry Gilbertson Qualifiers taking place over 3 rounds of qualifying to get into the matchplay.

Round 1 – Robert Geddes takes top spot in both the Gross and Handicap leader boards with a superb 68, followed by Alan Patterson, Mike Stein and Andrew Bain all with 72’s. The Top 10 were 76 or better with defending Champion Kieren Fraser having a little work to do with a 77 opening round.

Round 2 – Alan Harcus and David Nicol lead the way with 73’s , closely followed by Grant Wiseman, Ernie smith, Captain Ramsay Hogg, 2018 Shetland Open winner David Mckenzie, Robbie Twin, and Stuart Tomlinson on 74. Leader Geddes came in with a 75 to almost secure his place through to the knockout with a round to spare.

Round 3 – With about 16-20 players having the opportunity to still qualify through to the Knockout matchplay, it was going to be tight to get in. Defending Champ Kieren Fraser, came in with an excellent 69 just as he did 12 months ago to ensure his place in the matchplay. Ross Macdougall 71, David Mckenzie 72, Alan Harcus 73, Ramsay Hogg 73 were the next best rounds of the day. David Nicol was massively unlucky with his 79 which included a 9 on the 18th which drops him out of the Top 8 for qualifying.

In Stableford competition News – Keith Fraser won the Sunday 19th Stableford with a great score of 40 points, which got him a handicap reduction to take him into single figures.

John Strmsek demolished the field on Saturday 25th with his 48 points. A round which was all Pars and Bogeys got him a 4.2 reduction in handicap also. Spare a thought for Steven Goodlad, who can feel a bit hard done by to have 40 points and still be nowhere near winning.

Special mention to Dougie Shearer who hit a hole in 1 on the 2nd in his match play against David Nicol. David confirmed that Dougie has indeed left an open Tab behind the bar……

Looking forward to start of next month we have the DELTA MARINE Mixed Open doubles on 1st June. An away date in Whalsay on Saturday 8th for County championships.
