The Shetland Junior Golf Open sponsored by BP was played on Sunday 20th June and although there was not much sunshine, the playing conditions were fine with hardly any wind. With over forty children taking part in four different competitions there was great excitement and fun throughout the day.
The youngest children took part in a four hole fun competition and for some of them this was their first time on the course. The scores were all very close and the eventual winner by a single shot was Mark Hutcheon, second place was Callum Leask and third Neve Middleton.
The largest entry with twenty children was in the seven hole fun competition. Some superb shots were witnessed by impressed parents as the competition progressed. In first place with an excellent score of 41 was Ian Jamieson from Whalsay, second place was Ryan Kirk with a 44, third was Connor Uren with a 45 and fourth was Stuart Bain with a 51. In the girls competition Eleanor Hutcheon was the clear winner with a fantastic score of 46, in second place was Lianne Jamieson with a 54. One notable and impressive shot of the day was by Liam Davie whose drive on the second hole not only cleared the second green but also the third tee and was found in the rough, a huge hit but just on the wrong hole.
The nine hole competition was played on the back nine holes and at the end two players Andrew Bain and Kieren Fraser were tied in first place with gross scores of 52. A sudden death playoff down the tenth hole was required to decide the winner. Both players found the green in two, Kieren putted first and just missed for a three but Andrew Bain sunk his put for a three and first place. Both first and second places in the nine hole handicap section went to Whalsay with Steven Anderson taking first place with net 35 and Rory Irvine was in second place with a net 44.
The eighteen hole competition finally saw Jake Constable add the Shetland Junior Open Championship to his ever increasing list of triumphs, with a winning gross score of 81, a superb score on the day. In second place was Sam Constable who edged out Stuart Fraser in third by virtue of a better back nine. In the net section Liam Coffey continued his good season by taking first place with a net 67, ahead of Sean Graham in second with a net 70 and third was Robbie Jamieson with a net 72.
The club are very grateful to BP for their continued support and sponsorship of the Shetland Junior Open. A thank you must also go out to everyone who helped during the day, from the cooks to the parents, the golf club coaches, Michael Grant for the food and Neil Manson from BP who presented the prizes.
