Mens Club Championship Final Match-Up Set

News Posted: 29th July 2019

David Mckenzie vs Ross MacDougall is set for 2019 Club Championship Final.

The 2018 Shetland Open Champion, David Mckenzie reached his first Final after an edgy semi final match up with Robert Geddes. With both players not been able to play a lot of golf in the build up it was always going to be a challenge to get the 'A' game on the course under a pressure situation. David started faster and went 2 up after 2, but then Robert proceeded to get level straight away on the next 2 holes. It was quite a scrappy affair as they went through 9 at A/S. David steadied the ship and went onto put together a run of Pars from 11 to the finish. This was enough to win 11th, 12th, and 13th, and this gave him a 3 hole lead. Robert played well from the 14th and made some excellent up and downs, to keep in the match, however his birdie putt on 16th came up just short and gave David the chance to win with a 2 putt par which he duly converted to win 3&2.

Ross MacDougall qualified for the 2019 Final after a semif final repeat with Ramsay Hogg. Ross got his revenge this year after losing out in the same stage last year. Ramsay started better and went into an early lead through 3 holes. Ross played some excellent approach shots and put the pressure on Ramsay from 4th to end of the front 9. As they pair got to 10th, Ross had converted his chances and was taking a 2up lead down the 10th. Ramsay struggled to a bogey after missing the green, but Ross let him off by 3 putting. This gave Ramsay a renewed glimmer of hope as they went down 11. Ramsay hit an excellent Tee shot on 12th, but missed the 6ft birdie chance to get back to 1 down, and this was a massive turning point in the match. Ross took control through the next few holes and as the pair stood on the 16th tee, it was deja vu from a year ago. Ross dormie 3 up and hoping to avoid a repeat of the comeback Ramsay accomplished last year. Ramsay managed to par 16, and 17 and that was good enough for hole wins as Ross made some uncharachteristic errors. Ross regrouped and as both players ended with a regulaton par on the 18th, it was good enough for Ross to win 1up and secure his Final spot, and as let out a sigh of relief!

Ross and David will be contesting the final on Tuesday 30th July, approx 1015 Tee off.

Good luck to both players and no matter what the result, its a great achievement to reach the final, let alone win it. Their was tremendous strength in depth that made it to the Knock out stages this year, and those players were -  Alan Harcus, Kieren Fraser, Ernie Smith, Mike Stein, Ramsay Hogg and Robert Geddes. There was some fantastic matches in very differing conditions.

Whoever wins will be a 1st time winner so a new name to be engraved, so play well to both David and Ross and best of luck!
