JW GRAY / TENNENTS OPEN 2019

News Posted: 24th June 2019

The inaugural JW Grays / Tennents Open took place this past weekend, with 60 Lady and Gentleman competitors having to test their skills against a tough northernly wind.

Ladies Handicap competition seen May Grant take 4th place with a 76, with Christine Simpson in 3rd place only 1 shot better at 75. Janice Johnston was 2nd place with her nett score of 74, and Winner on the day was Jenny Arthur with a 72 to take home the trophy.

In the Ladies Scratch competition, Lorraine Anderson took 2nd place with a 89 scratch, but it was Heather Hogg who handled the testing conditions best and won with an excellent 78 scratch score.

In the Gents Handicap contest Jock Sim secured 3rd step on the podium with a nett 70, Lee Carter was 1 better on 69 to give the former Club Champion 2nd place. Out in front and winning the trophy was Derek Nicolson who's fine performance on the day, meant he was the only person to get a reduction by being under their handicap. This highlights again how tough the play was and a score to be proud of.

In the Gents Scratch competition, there was a clear winner, but there was 4 players all with a score of 76 vying for 2nd place so countback on the back 9 was used to settle 2nd place down to 5th place. 5th went to current club champion Kieren Fraser, with Lee Carter in 4th. Alan Harcus took bottom spot on the podium, with Wilson Cup virgin Robert Geddes taking 2nd place. With an excellent 74, Robert Jamieson got his hands on the silverware and crowned JW Gray / Tennents Open Champion for 2019.

A big thanks to our sponsors, with Stephen Hutton present at the prize giving to hand out the trophy's, also to Grace for the excellent food, Allyn for his continued work with the course. It was good to see some Whalsay members down to play, although they were almost outnumbered by visiting (ex-members) players.

Always a pleasure to have ex members Peter sinclair and ex club captain and club champion Jordan Leask in shetland to enjoy a round of drinks.....golf i meant golf!
