Busy April and May for Ladies Golf

The new ladies golf season got underway in April with the Captain’s Challenge, a team competition between the Captains team and the Vice Captains team. On this occasion the Vice Captains team was victorious. Our new lady captain, Amy Miller, took the honours in the Eclectic competition with a nett 77 winning from Heather Hogg by virtue of a better back nine score. Shona Ward was successful in the Hidden Hole competition with a nett 70 followed by Mandy Henderson on nett 72. Mandy won the April Silver Medal with a nett score of 74, June Wishart winning the Bronze medal also with a nett 74. The nine-hole stableford competition was won by Kay Foster closely followed by May Gair. The first round of the George Burgess trophy saw Amy take the honours with 33 Stableford points again just edging out Heather on the back nine score. The nine-hole competition was won by Audrey Thompson with 16 points with May in second place with 13 points. Heather was successful in winning the RNLI trophy with 32 points, with Shona just losing out with 31. The weekly nine-hole competition was won by Margaret McNiven with 13 stableford points with May in second place with 13.

Competitions in May began with the Ocean Reaper trophy which saw Mildred Balance win with a nett score of 71, closely followed by Mandy Henderson also on nett 71 but Mildred had the better back nine score. The Disability Shield was won by Jenny Arthur who scored a nett 72 with Helen Thompson in second place with a nett 74. The second round of the George Burgess trophy resulted in a win for Margaret Simpson with a score of 34 stableford points followed closely by Linda Ruthven on 32 points. Heather was again successful winning the Cancer trophy with both her and June Wishart scoring an excellent nett 67 and 69. The Ladies Masters trophies resulted in wins for Margaret Simpson and Helen Thompson. The Coronation foursomes competition brought success for the Whalsay mother and daughter combination of Rosie Sandison and Angelina Jamieson followed in second place by Mildred Balance and Margie Pearson.

The first open competition of the season was the Ladies Open Pairs sponsored by DFDS which was played on Saturday 25th May, 2019. Winners of the Gross trophy were Jenny Arthur and Margaret Simpson with a gross 86 closely followed by Heather Hogg and Audrey Thompson with 87. Loraine Anderson and Mary Stewart took the honours in the nett section with an excellent nett score of 67, Amy Miller and Shona Ward were in second place with a nett 69, the Whalsay pairing of Margie and Cathy Shearer took third place on nett 73 and in fourth Liz Simpson and Yvonne Smith 77. In their first experience of Dale golf course, it was an all Whalsay contest in the nine-hole section with Ann-Marie Smith and Jacqueline Irvine narrowly winning with a nett 39 from Rhiana Constable and Krissie Robertson on 40.
